Sir Jadunath Sarkar's Collection

Jadunath Sarkar (1870-1958) was a foremost historian on the Mughal Dynasty. His collection contains about 2,500 rare items, including books, periodicals, pamphlets, off-prints from journals, manuscripts, photo-copies of manuscripts and maps. The collection consists of books on history, mainly of books on Mughal and British history. Almost all the major works on Shivaji and Marathas, Rajput Kingdom and the Revolt of 1857 are available.

The collection also includes many typed copies of French works on India and many translations of Persian works into English by Jadunath Sarkar himself. Some of the rare and important works in this collection are : Fatuhat-I-Alamgiri, Delhi Chronicle (1738-1798 A.D.), Oudh Akhbarat (1786), Jaipur Records, Bengal Affairs (1739-1752), the Marathi Sources (1732-1789), and a biographical dictionary of post-Aurangzeb's rulers. The collection also has some rare maps of Mughal Empire.

S. N. Sen Collection

Surendra Nath Sen (1890-1962) was one of the first ranking scholars and historians. He was the Head of the Department of History, Calcutta University, Keeper of Records of Government of India (1939), after wards recognised as the National Archives of India. He was also the Vice Chancellor of the University of Delhi (1950).


This collection of 3620 books are in English, Bengali, Marathi and Portuguese Languages. The majority of these books are on history. The collection also has some rare journals of different societies. The Marathi books in this collection are extremely rare and the best source of Maratha history.

Sapru Collection

Tej Bahadur Sapru (1878-1949) was a noted jurist and Statesman. He played an important role in the transition of power from British Government to proposed Indian Government as well as proposed Pakistani Government. In 1952 his children donated the dossier of his correspondence, consisting of several thousand letters and other papers. These letters are historically important, as many of the facts and aspects of some events of national importance, are obtainable only in these letters. National Library has published an index of these letters.
